Many of the techniques he is teaching us is cutting edge technology, alongside lots of hands-on methods, with some overlap into the equine world. There will be an opportunity to see demonstrations of diagnostics and specific prescriptive rehabilitation, depending on the live cases, plus valuable insight into other common cases.

His knowledge as vet, Farrier and Equine Chiropractor gives him quite different perspectives from his contemporaries. His concern about horse’s back made him study in depth what affect the saddle has on the horse’s back. He has developed different diagnosis and treatment techniques that he uses in daily practice.

Minutes of the general member meeting

21st of November 2009, 17:30 p.m., Leonardo Airport Hotel Frankfurt (M), Germany - Minutes by Ute Körner

37 members including 5 board members

1. Address of welcome

Joao Paulo Marques welcomed the members.

He asked all attendees if they are happy with taping the meetings rather than protocoling it: No one against, no abstention: the meeting was taped.

The members of the board introduced themselves.

2. Reading and approval of the minutes from the last general meeting

The minutes were sent out to all members after the last membership meeting. Everybody had received them. Nobody wanted J.P. Marques to read the minutes out loud.

The minutes were approved by everybody.

3. Report of the cash audit

Dr. Petra Peer read out a summary of the cash report 2008:

  • The money that the IVCA has received through membership fees, entry fees and donations were used for the following association activities:
  • The membership fees were used to pay Helga Thorwartl (at the IVCA office), to print leaflets and other organizational things as well as the website. The money from the membership fees that has not been used flows into the research fund. At the 31st of December 2008 the accumulated sum from the last years for the research fund was 57.714,30 €.
  • The board members agreed on supporting Emma Fretwells research project (details below) with the sum of €13.500.-. Mrs Fretwell will give a detailed invoice to the office of the IVCA.
  • Accreditation of the schools that were preliminary accredited will take part in 2010 and will cost the IVCA approximately €5.000.- per school. This will amount to costs of €30.000,-
  • The IVCA is still willing to support research concerning chiropractic in animals. Members are asked to develop research ideas.
  • Paulo proposed the acceptance of the cash audit. It was accepted with no votes against it.

4. Discharge of the board (managing committee)

  • Ivan Danne talked about the acitivities of IVCA in 2008:
  • The managing committee held regular telephone conferences
  • The website was improved, it holds information now about each member if he/she is certified or not.
  • Letters concerning CE will be sent out in the next couple of days
  • Organisation of the actual meeting was done by Petra Peer and Alex Keller, Thank You!
  • Paulo proposed the discharging of the managing committee. The managing committee was discharged with no votes against it.

5. Statutory election and/or re-election of board members

The positions of Emma Fretwell, Paulo Marques and Petra Peer in the managing committee were open for election because of the 2 year rhythm. The other members of the managing board are Ivan Danne and Ute Körner. All three of them were ready to keep on going if they are re-elected.

Nobody else was proposed for election. All three of them were re-elected with no votes against them, all of them accepted their election.

6. Report of the research committee

Donald Moffatt named the members of the committee as Donald Moffatt, Bianca Carstens, Silke Werths, and Kuno von Plocki.
There was only one project brought forward to them which is the project from Emma Fretwell.
All other questions brought up to this committee were general without precise project ideas.

Emma Fretwell introduced her project concerning chiropractic care in cattles:

2 groups of 10 cows, one as a control group
chiropractic treatment every second week, control is unspecific touched
monthly examination of milk: amount, somatic cell count and butter fat
last 5 month showed impressive improvement of these parameters in the treatment group
project is supposed to last 18 month altogether

Another project is brought forward by Beatrix Wanas: She has already started to treat chronic colic horses and monitored the improvements if there were any. She only did two cases. Donald Moffatt offers his help formulating the project properly.

One more question is discussed. If it would be possible to publish research findings on the website. This might be a problem if these results are supposed to be published as a paper in a journal... Therefore it would only be possible to do that in the members area, which is not working yet. For information if research on a certain problem is done already, contact to Donald Moffatt was proposed.

Donald Moffatt proposed to advertise a reward for the best research of the year. This could offer an incentive for more research and / or could help to finance further research on the topic.

7. Report of the examination committee

Dr. Petra Peer reports:

6 examinations in 2009:
3 x IAVC
  1 x Backbone Academy,
  2 x Options for animals.
128 examinees failed in theory: 31
  failed in practical: 6
  failed in both parts: 2

Examinations always take part the day after the schools examinations to make it easier for the students to take part.

Thanks a lot to the examiners!

8. Standards of education and program accreditation procedures

The IVCA has developed standards for the accreditation of schools that offer a basic animal chiropractic course. These standards of education provide the minimum standard that is expected from a school to be accredited by the IVCA. These standards were sent to the schools by post.

Deadline for acknowledgements is April 2010; Schools that send their information in before the end of February 2010 do not have to pay the € 1000,- administrative charges.

9. Other optional points

none

10. Additional discussions on petitions brought forward

There were no additional petitions brought forward

Next general meeting will probably take part on 20th of November 2010, it is discussed, but not decided yet where to arrange it.

J.P. Marques thanked everyone for taking part and closed the meeting at 6.45 p.m.
